Roots
The organization traces its origins with the Philfonds foundation, that "supports children in the Philippines with a handicap in (special) education ... aimed at children who, without help from third parties would have no or little chance on education and/or well-being". As a result of Philfonds' help, many handicapped children are able to finish secondary education with prospects for a much better future. Unfortunately, even with basic education, some of these children are still not able to make a living for themselves. In addition to the basic difficulty of employment for the handicapped, Philfonds graduates will sometimes lack the proper skill or skill level at which they can be employed or earn a living.
The role of LEBD is to augment the basic education of Philfonds graduates with skills that will help them earn a living and become independent citizens.. The training requirements and methods for the handicapped are different from normal courses; in addition, not every workplace will be suitable for them. LEBD understands and incorporates these factors accordingly into its execution strategy by targeting primarily occupations that are less dependent on the handicap's impairment. For example, therapeutic massage and reflexology can be practiced by the blind, while the deaf can be involved in primarily visual work such as sewing and word processing on a computer. The organization also aims to be able to provide employment opportunities to a limited number of its trainees.
